Report of the Directors |
for the Year Ended 31 March 2014 |
The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the year ended 31 March 2014. |
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY |
The principal activity of the company in the year under review was that of advancing education by music related |
workshops and events. |
REVIEW OF BUSINESS |
I have had an inspiring year as Chair of Brighter Sound, seeing through our work the different ways people interact with |
music and the impact it has on their lives and on those around them - from children struggling with school and home life |
to emerging musicians looking for a creative epiphany. |
I have seen how our company's drive to deliver the work it does stems from witnessing the deep impact of creative music |
making - in particular music that is collaboratively written, that is truly relevant to the different people, organisations and |
sectors that we work with. |
I have been impressed by the musicians we work with, who are not only great artists but have a brilliance about the way |
they communicate, engage and inspire. |
I have seen how the programmes we produce can genuinely create altered states, catalyse creativity stimulate curiosity |
and imagination, can change lives, inspire collaboration and break down barriers. How they can not only empower |
emerging musicians, children, young people, and people of all ages - but how the work they produce can inspire and |
reach audiences across all sectors and all communities. |
The highlights of this year were Brighter Sound's significant work with Music Education Hubs across the North West |
Region, specifically working towards structural change through advising, promoting, and delivering musical inclusion |
activity and progression routes across a wide range of children and young people in challenging circumstances. |
This work has positioned the company as an expert in its field with MEH's and Local Authorities commissioning the |
company to deliver needs analysis of the sector and Brighter Sound presenting at the National Music Mark Conference |
in November. |
In addition it was really exciting to see the legacy of our second Artistic Directors Series residency with Snarky Puppy |
and the emerging musicians performing as part of the Manchester Jazz Festival and subsequently the commissioning of |
Brighter Sound by Manchester City Council to creatively produce a curated artistic residency as a highlight of the |
Manchester Central Library's opening programme. |
The broadening of the Creative Learning Programme with early years Shake Rattle and Roll, our Manchester Youth Jazz |
Collective and further performances of our Golden Voices Choir has also invigorated our host venue Band on the Wall |
and it has been pleasing to see the strengthening and development of that partnership. |
Finally, our Excellence in Singing programme reached children and young people in challenging circumstances across |
Greater Manchester and created 3 new Choirs with a focus on creative writing and singing. It was great to witness the |
huge impact this programme had on young peoples confidence building, composing and writing skills. |
This year has also seen Brighter Sound grow its strategic impact and profile. We were successful in achieving Charitable |
Status enabling us to raise resources from a wider range of Trusts and Foundations and Donors. |
We were also successful in our Musical Inclusion Extension application and our application to be part of the Exchanging |
Notes programme- a national research programme working with schools to look at formal and non formal pedagogies |
through music. In addition in March 2014 we heard we were successful in our ACE application for our Wall of Sounds |
Programme. |
However there have been challenges. General cutbacks in arts funding and challenges in our own fundraising meant that |
we had to think carefully about our long-term financial stability through to 2014/15. We have managed a restructure of |
our core team that will enable us to flexibly work around future fluctuations in funding, whilst maintaining our usual |
level of excellence in strategy and delivery. |
