Company activities and impact

Loss is a universal experience that will affect us all at some point in our lives. Our vision is to create a loss positive culture that enables us all to accept grief and loss as a part of life and to support each other better. The Loss Project is creating a framework to help individuals, communities and organisations to acknowledge the loss in a healthier way in whatever context. We work with and acknowledge all losses, including living losses, such as jobs, relationships, connections etc as well as the loss of loved ones. We are interested to understand the interaction between losses and how we can create a culture that acknowledges, embraces and even celebrates this complex human experience. The Loss Project aims to generate a community response to loss by connecting people in local communities through their experiences of grief, loss and trauma, in whatever form they come in. Our mission is to challenge the stigma and taboo around loss, cutting through the barriers of difficult conversations and subjects that can often remain unspoken. We put people with lived experience first whilst building capacity, awareness, and confidence for us to support ourselves and each other. Through training, workshops, and bespoke creative community programmes, we aim to support communities to become more open and connected. During our first year in operation, we have delivered the following:- Continued delivering free monthly online group sessions for participants to share, process and connect with others experiencing loss,- Delivered a range of training and workshops with third sector organisations, including The Local Area Coordination Network, Goldsmith’s University, and The Local Trust- Delivered a project called The Long Lost Year with The Local trust, reflecting on loss and hope in light of the pandemic- Created a range of free and paid for resources, including creative writing bubble packs and how to run a community memorial- Supported a hospice in Scotland with coaching and mentoring of their Compassionate Communities team,Feedback includes: Carly’s enthusiasm and commitment to helping us flourish has been key to our early success in shaping a Compassionate Communities team here at St Columba’s Hospice Care. We have begun working with and alongside our local communities and neighbourhoods to engage people in conversations about death, dying, grief and loss, and to co-create meaningful and practical networks of support. We approached Carly after discovering her work on The Loss Project and the six, individually tailored mentoring sessions she offered us have been invaluable. The depth and range of Carly’s experience in both hospice and community development settings gave her real insight into the challenges we faced, organisationally and in our own development, both personal and professional. Carly offered a safe and confidential space, masses of flexibility to decide our own priorities at each online meeting, an insightful grasp of the learning curve we were on, and lots of laughter along the way. We couldn’t have hoped for a wiser or more generous cheerleader. Thanks Carly!”"I found it useful hearing other people's stories. It makes you feel that it's okay not to be okay.""The way I think about my loss is less of a loss and more of a connection with an absence. This gave me a chance to catch on to memories and bring them to life again.""I feel not so alone now about how I feel and that other people feel the same as I do. It's been great, thank you.""I liked that it was intimate and small; it feels comfortable. If there were double the amount of people, I think it would have been more anonymous/ less personal."Various Workshop Participant feedback'I engaged the Loss Project to deliver some workshops for the east London freelancer's Network. They were so empathetic and professional, listening to the needs of the network and even producing take-home mate-rials for those who couldn't attend the workshops. I'd use them again.'Lily Einhorn, East London Freelancer's Network (Theatre)

Consultation with stakeholders

We have varied groups of stakeholders including people with lived experience of grief and loss. Our core work focuses on people losses and this is one of our biggest stakeholder groups. We have a collaborative spirit and as such consider everyone who participates in The Loss Project as a valued stakeholder, including our partners and external facilitators. We co-design our workshops with participants and flex our work to adapt to different contexts and losses. Our digital resources are codesigned and delivered where possible with people with lived experience. When we develop any project or piece of work, we undertake a full consultation and codesign process in order to inform our work, this is especially important due to the subject matter that we deal with. For example, The Long Lost Year project worked with staff, volunteers and members of the 150 site network to develop the project around loss and hope in light of the pandemic. This consultation and codesign process enabled us to design sensitive, effective and impactful workshops and activities that most benefited the network and culminated in the Big Connect event.
